Crochet for Charity: Warm Up America!
At the Crochet Guild of America (CGOA), we know that every stitch holds the power to comfort, connect, and inspire. Few organizations embody that spirit more than the Warm Up America! Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing warmth and support to those in need through handmade knit and crochet items.
What Is Warm Up America?
Founded in 1991, Warm Up America! began with a simple idea: collect small, individual sections of knit or crochet fabric, seam them together, and create cozy afghans for those without warmth. Since then, the foundation has expanded its mission, collecting thousands of handmade blankets, hats, scarves, baby items, and more for people facing difficult circumstances—from unhoused individuals and veterans to families affected by natural disasters.
What makes Warm Up America! especially accessible is its modular approach: makers can contribute 7” x 9” sections, which are then joined together to form larger projects. This means even beginners can contribute, and every square becomes part of a larger story of generosity.
How Crocheters Can Get Involved
As crocheters, we know that even the simplest stitch can bring comfort. Here are some ways you can support Warm Up America!:
-Crochet 7” x 9” Sections: These building blocks are at the heart of the foundation’s projects. Any stitch pattern or yarn weight is welcome, making it a wonderful stash-busting opportunity.
-Complete Projects: Blankets, hats, scarves, and baby clothing are always in demand. Warm Up America! shares guidelines and patterns on their website to make it easy to contribute.
-Host a Join-A-Thon: Gather fellow guild members or friends to join squares into finished afghans. These events are a beautiful way to build community while helping others.
-Donate Supplies or Funds: Not everyone has the time to stitch, but every skein of yarn and every dollar helps keep the mission moving forward.
